The Birthday Gift (#NaPoWriMo Day 1)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry Add comments

Hello 🙂

It is apparently National/Global poetry writing month in April (!) so I thought I would write a poem today using the prompt from the corresponding site: ‘a secret shame or pleasure’.

Here is what I came up with:

THE BIRTHDAY GIFT

As I read all her ideas

I balked at the choice

Of those expensive red shoes

(In my big girl voice)

But those Mary Jane buckles

Worked their magic on me:

In the night I was dreaming

Of my primary…

I used to own patents

In burgundy, and

Was so very proud of

My sweet feet in the sand!

There, in my memory,

Bold as can be –

Were little (red-ish) Mary-Janes

Modelled by ME!

So! I boxed up my objections,

Gift-wrapped, used bows;

And presented those pretties

To my daughter (composed).

Thanks for the nudge, Jennifer!
