Hello!

“I’d like to challenge you today to write a poem about an animal” [NaPoWriMo site]

I took a breather in the garden today as the kids were back at school and I was feeling a little out of sorts (over nothing in particular).

I looked up at the lovely white-blossom tree that bobs above our back fence, and relaxed to the general low hub-bub of the neighbourhood mixed with the sounds of nature.

Inhaled.

Exhaled…

I listened: a familiar song!

A blackbird spied upon the lawn –

A dapper fellow, sooted out,

Tossing leaves and twigs about.

His melody does take me back

To a dear man, with records stacked;

Who taught me many gentle things

‘Bout moss, trains – and how blackbirds sing.

Now that man rests on heaven’s shore,

But morning’s broken here once more;

Despite his garb, this bird brought smiles:

His serenade a welcome wile.

Until tomorrow, dear readers…
