I was looking at the Inktober prompts for Day 18 and 19, and a wee germ of an idea popped into my head. I remembered a pic Hubby had taken of me just before I went guising with the boys for Halloween last year (after I had dressed up as “dead eighties”) where I am standing looking straight at the camera in a full-length shot:
The official prompts for Day 18 and 19 were “misfit” and “sling”. I am a tad eccentric and socially awkward (!) so using me as the misfit seemed…well fitting. I am wearing 80s clothing in the pic, but if you look at the basic shapes I could be in the wild west (long jacket and boots) or in some sort of Joss Whedon series…
Then there is the word “sling” which conjures images of broken arms…or guns. So, I went for both.
Youngest thinks the first drawing I did looks the most like me:
But I messed around with the face (and the position of the gun-arm) a LOT until I was ready to ink:
I did end up inking it in the end, however, and even went the route of just doing different shading techniques to indicate the end of one type of clothing and the beginning of the next.
I find this piece quite amusing, although our boys can’t get their heads around why I would want to draw myself with a gun as they could never imagine me using one…
I did pause to congratulate myself on that score!!
The painting streak wasn’t neglected either, I managed to get this little scene and a paint-and-salt experiment on paper. I’ll see what shapes I can spy in the latter once it dries, and whether I can ink something onto it eventually.
I am happy that I have managed to keep to my creative goals even although it is the school holidays. It really helps that our boys find enjoyment in seeing their mum messing about with art materials like a big kid 😉
Day 18
Day 19
I hope you are still inking away merrily if you have been doing Inktober this year and, as always, please leave me a link to your work in the comments so I can come and cheer you on!

Today’s Inktober prompt was “ornament” so I went for a Christmassy theme. I am definitely not someone who has got everything ready months in advance, or has the tree up at the end of November or anything, but I have very few ‘unseasonal’ ornaments out these days thanks to our rambunctious children, so these archetypal shapes in my memory had to do 😉
I added colour today, but it is technically all still inked because I used my lovely set of gel pens one of my brothers in law gave me as a gift (and a bright orange biro I had for penning poetry) 🙂
I did the below as my quick painted piece for the day – the height of the sun and the colours/reflection don’t really match, but it’s a doodle in paint and that’s what I was after 😉
Remember: if you are doing Inktober, or indeed art of any kind, I’d love to see your work. Please leave me a link in the comments and I’ll come and visit your page or blog.

The Inktober prompt for Day 16 was “wild” so I went onto Pixabay to get some flowery inspiration.
I used this picture and started with the lovely sunflowers:
I then moved on to the pinky-purple flowers in the middle, trying to get the feel of the undulating petals, and popped in a bud and another flower for good measure.
I really like all the little details I managed to get in (especially as the bud looks like something with evil intent?) so I again decided not to paint anything. Three days in a row of just pen with no pencil underneath, then no colourful additions! I really do find I lose myself in the drawing more when I know mistakes are not as easy to fix!
I doodled some made-up flowers to fulfil my painting quota for today. The orange one looks more like an insignia, but no matter 😉
So now we are definitely half way through our month of ink! Catch you soon for Day 17’s pen adventures 🙂

The Inktober prompt for today was “legend”, and my head is still full of Greek mythology thanks toPercy Jackson; so it was quite easy to pen a quickish drawing.
What you see here are the artifacts that are said to be most precious to the ‘Big Three’ Greek brother-gods: Hades’ helmet, Zeus’ thunderbolt and Poseidon’s trident. (I modelled the trident onthispic, hence the bit in the middle which now looks a little strange…)
Again I left out the colouring part, so I did a quick ‘paint-doodle’ before midnight to keep my daily habit going. It is also loosely based on my reading about Percy Jackson, because in The Sea of Monsters he and Annabeth end up on a lifeboat after another vessel goes down, and there are lots of cliffs about 😉
Have you been making arty marks with your pens this October? Drop me a link to your work in the comments and I’ll check it out!

Today was a special day, because it marked a year since I made the decision to become properly interested in portraiture, and indeed began to think seriously about creating any drawings that I would be happy for other people to see (and possibly own). I drew a face that looked a bit like Cher (!), and then I was off on a little adventure. One that sees me painting and drawing every day now 🙂
The Inktoberprompt for today was “overgrown” and I intended to sketch out a tower with a nice turret-style roof and vines snaking up the side of it. So, I sat down in front of another episode of Monk on Prime…and suddenly decided that I didn’t want to do something in pencil and ink it over.
I took out my ‘XS’ PITT pen and began to draw a heart. Then I put vines around the heart and added some barbed wire – all while still enjoying Monk.
[The words “binding with briars my joys and desires” kept running through my head, which is silly because William Blake is significant in The Mentalist, and I finished watching all the seasons of that weeks ago…]
Next, I went onto Pixabayand looked up pictures of ivy, then incorporated some leaves of that into my piece. I made the vines and heart bolder with the small chisel tipped PITT pen, and added a bit of detail to the vines’ wrappings on the heart with the XS pen.
Lastly, I looked up some Pixabay photos of roses, and made some peek out at the top and side.
I am relieved it turned out ok because, as I mentioned the other day, we have no working correction fluid in the house!
I opted out of colouring this in as it is inktober and I hadn’t used any other medium yet on the piece. I did doodle with my paint in my watercolour pad, however, which resulted in this weird pic of a disembodied hand holding a glass in front of a woman whose lipstick matches the nail polish?! Funny how things turn out…
So I think I’ll scoot off now, and meet you back here for Day 15. Remember to drop me a link in the comments if you are Inktober-ing, too!

A dragon also seemed fitting for today’s Inktoberprompt of “ash”, so I sketched out a wee scene, then inked it:
I think this looks like a pregnant dragon this time, and I think we definitely need to mind our manners with her! 😉
The boys came and hung out with me while I was adding colour to the scene with my paints. They were impressed with the lava. Our two always seem to work lava into their games, so I thought I would, too.
There was some deliberation about which colour to paint this dragon, Youngest advocating for another blue one, but with the sky so close I helped him see the ‘need’ for a purple dragon.
With my tired eyes, the dragon painting went a bit wonky in places, but I stuck with it and just coloured the spikes in with a matchy pencil. If I was being really fussy, I’d go around everything again with a fineliner because it all blends together a little too much (and maybe I still will…) but for now, here we are.
You can see the ash on the grass in front of the dragon, can’t you?! Baby’s given her bad heartburn today… 😉

Today we seem to have been revisited by one of the characters from Day 4, for our Inktober prompt of “snow”…
Our boys think that the alien is looking at the children on a screen, but I think it’s probably the view through the big window that we saw when her ship was behind her, while playing with the adult alien? She seems to be parked quite close to the action, so I am wondering if her ship has its cloaking device activated?!
Anyway, I sketched the scene out in pencil as you can see above, then inked the foreground in a wider pen than the background, to try and get a sense of distance:
The black tree was a bit weird, however, almost looking like it had grown from the screen/window surround! I decided to paint over it a bit in my white watercolour to try and make it look like it had snow on it. (I had attempted to revive our very dried-up correction fluid with a bit of water, but it didn’t play nice).
Unfortunately my white paint in the pan was more like a pale pink from the last time I had used it, but by the time I had put in the sky and brighter bushes etc it wasn’t that noticeable.
I may have gone a bit overboard with the autumnal colour scheme, but who says it’s even our planet she’s viewing, eh?!
I mostly coloured the children in with my pencils because they are small and fiddly. I used watercolour for other things, including the nice vibrant yellow of our alien friend, but I must say: something about the lines and the shape of her head without the hat remind me of Tweety Bird!!
To the naked eye, the green around the window is all the same intensity, but for some reason when I photograph it, it seems much paler to the right and by the alien. *shrugs*
And so concludes Day 11 😉 what fun can I have with Day 12’s prompt of “dragon”, do we think…?

Being a crocheter and sometimes-knitter, this made me smile. However, I went the route of drawing a pleasing kinda-matchy patch of flowers and leaves, instead. I used one of the chiselled Pitt pens and then painted what I drew (no pencil involved this time)
It pleases me, but it is not that inspired. It did make me go flicking through by ‘back catalogue’ of other times that I have just created something to occupy the page (so I could fulfil my drawing and painting promise to myself)
This pic is from March, when I was experimenting with what salt does to paint:
I don’t know if you see anything, but I think I could get a pretty convincing dragon shape outlined in there if I wanted to?
Then there are the big flower shapes that I drew in April. I could almost live with this as feature wall paper:
And lastly, from late April into May this year, I doodled this mass of leaves. I messed about with trying to make some of them look a little unhealthy or overwatered, and some just vibrant, etc. over quite a few evenings.
Watercolour is a tricky medium because it is not easy to keep the colour consistent and I get annoyed by paper getting too wet in places and curling up, or a mixed shade running out on me before I get to the end of the piece I had in mind.
Looking back over my practise doodles, however, it brings me joy because I remember that I came to the page to work little by little at getting down what was in my head, or to chip away at how I can make lines and colour bend to my will. It has been a very enjoyable journey so far, and I’m sure that will continue for years to come 😉
