Of Ritual and Thunder

Random poetry 2 Comments »

Hello!

I rummaged through my craft cupboard and picked some nice material to roll my Haikubes on today.  It ended up inspiring my first poem, which I wrote in the ballad style (a syllable pattern of 8-6-8-6, with an abcb rhyme scheme).

What I rolled today Starting to sort into groups

Flying ritual – wicked journey! –

With my broom partner, Doug;

Shot around the solar system

Dodging all the space-thugs.

I only rolled six blank kube faces, and I proceeded to use them all for that first poem!!

three poems, and some leftovers!

I still constructed two more poems with the blocks I had left, however…one in the Hiaku structure of 5-7-5 syllables (though its subject matter is not strictly Hiaku material), and the last in the longer Tanka style of

5-7-5-7-7 😉

Watching Mommy, I

went places.  Any stage ran

smooth for gleeful cheeks.

Alternate riches:

Stay ravenous for simple.

Surface mature, girl.

My shady waste left me sour

Mouthing anal thunder, too.

I was swithering about whether ‘sour’ was a one- or two-syllable word; but I looked it up, and it is just one.  Hurrah!!

I have eleven words left over to play with tomorrow as well, so I am quite pleased with how this session went!

Are you liking the return to my random poetry tinkerings?  Have you any suggestions for other things you would like to see me tackle?

Please pop a comment on here, or visit my social media pages I’ve linked below, and let me know what’s working for you!

Of Fortune, A Hero (And Muck)

Other Poetry, Random poetry, Relationships No Comments »

Hey There!

I got to thinking, and realised that I could probably write a Cinquain or two with a roll of my Haikubes! (This is the poetry type that has five lines, and a syllable structure of 2-4-6-8-2)

So…

Today's roll of the Haikubes dice...

I grabbed one of the red-printed kubes to give me the first topic (‘My Future’) and came up with this:

First cinquain I got from my Kubes

Fortune:

Hoped-for return

Screwed, ‘neath heavy ‘balance’.

Empty fantasy…fathom this,

Fortune!

I loved that I got ‘fortune’ twice in one roll, and other alliterative words to put with it!! Also, the blank kube faces that came up add even more options, as I can insert my own words.  I imagined the speaker/me giving a rude gesture at the end 😉

Speaking of rude, I got quite a few words that, when put together, could be rather ‘Ooooh Maaatron!’ in this selection…!

Words that could be said to be rude

The next roll of the topic-kube gave me ‘A Regret About’, so I used some of the naughtier stuff in my second cinquain (this one is definitely not about me!!):

My second cinquain

Hero

Rides into town;

Clever words…my room…the

Desperate tangle…our wet flesh…

Baby.

I managed to get one last cinquain out of my selection, and this time it had to be about ‘Our World’.  I decided to look at climate change, starting with the milder end (where we are seeing strong winds etc more often); and ending with the really tragic pictures we sometimes catch on the news.  (Just to finish on a sober note, in case you were enjoying this post at all…)

Luckily I had just enough blank kube-faces left to write this one!

My third cinquain

Climate:

Biting wind blows

Down gentle shady trees/

Boy must search for slimy, muck-death

Parents…

I had 15 intriguing words (plus one ending of ‘-esque’) left over, so I’ve taken a picture of them to enable me to construct a random word poem for tomorrow!

Here is the whole scene from my cinquain session today, just so you can see that I didn’t cheat 😉

All my cinquains and left over Kubes

Be sure to check out tomorrow’s post to see what I come up with for the leftovers!!

[Who knows, I may even pick a prettier background than a shoebox lid, my notepad and Eldest’s carpet… 😛 ]

Howdy-do!

My older brother-in-law (Hubby’s side) bought me a set of Haikubes for Christmas, having seen them in a bookshop and figuring they well suited my random poetry leanings! My inlaws are actually visiting us at the moment, so I got a chance to try out the cubes while my BIL could witness the results 😉

There are two dice printed (in red) with subject prompts, and the rest provide words that are one’s choices to make up Haiku/Senryu (a three line poem with the syllable structure 5-7-5).

I tried a first one in the way it was intended:

First Haikubes attempt

So the subject prompt is ‘a desire for’…

Watching hero hoped.

(They point behind you, sister)

He must have that girl.

There were so many tantalising word blocks left over from my throw of them all, however!!  I couldn’t just leave them there…so I compiled a second Senryu (it’s about a major human foible!) without a prompt:

Second attempt with Haikubes

Peace dancing clever…

Body, killed one wicked war:

cover waste with wise.

Then…well…the kids came to mind for a third wee crack at my (now dwindling) selection of cubes 😉

Third attempt with Haikubes

Sleeping marvel…or

Torture! Trouble! Heavy blocks!

(But so not simple)

So thanks BIL, that was definitely a gift that will keep me inspired!

(Stay tuned: Hubby’s youngest brother gave me a book about the kids’ Raspberry Pi 3.  I see fun with that in our near future!!)

Run Wild

Facebook Collaborations, Random poetry No Comments »

Hi 🙂

I think I strayed a little from Michelle’s brief, but I quite like what came of my dabbling!

Michelle gave me the title of this post, and asked that I wrote a poem about “an ivory poacher having a change of heart”.

Technically, I wrote about a rich white guy in about the 1800s who usually pays for people to get him the ivory in order to make money from it, but goes along for the hunt this time…an act that was not illegal or particularly frowned upon until the 1970s and 80s.  So not a poacher, unless you use the more general term of “any encroachment on another’s property, rights, ideas, or the like”.

I would say killing an Elephant for its tusks violates its rights…

Run Wild

A rivalry

For ivory

Is pointless, ‘far as I can see;

Barbarically

We wait ‘neath trees

With guns to fell what should be free.

elephant close up

What paltry sums

To lift said guns;

At once to murderers become!

Orphan the young –

Once deed is done

Let noble carcass rot in sun…

My education came to naught

If empathy was seldom taught!

Once witnessed, ne’er be forgot:

That worth of life cannot be bought.

The words just flowed out in this rather pompous style for the first verse (they often do when I try to rhyme) and I just went with it,  knowing that people today don’t write like this!  As hubby pointed out, however, there are still those with too much money who think it is good sport to kill large animals, so the above is topical even if not exactly on task 😉

Sorry Michelle, your recent specs have made me think, but also kinda cheat!!! Thanks muchly for all you send my way, however *grins*.

I shall try and dream up a new sticky post this evening, to keep writing material that you lovely readers want to see on here (or at least approximations of it…haha).

At Rainbow’s End

Facebook Collaborations, Parenting, Random poetry 2 Comments »

Hi there 🙂

Apologies to all!  Two days without writing!!  Eeeek!!!

As I put on my Facebook page, I was feeling pretty yuck all day Friday and I decided to abandon hopes of writing anything coherent.  I did mean to hop back on here yesterday (Saturday) with two new pieces instead, written in the evening when everything got a bit quieter and my sludgy thoughts would have a chance to maybe band together.  Unfortunately my kids are very good at giving cuddles and Hubby thought I really needed the rest and didn’t wake me when I fell asleep around 8.30pm…

So here I am about 6 hours later, typing you a poem I wrote when I woke up!

Alana, one of my lovely longstanding ‘Comfy’ readers, is not on Facebook but text me:

“What about a poem about, say, a young single mum wondering what’s in the actual pot at the end of the rainbow?”

Interesting…

My prince will come…

But he’ll be dumb.

(Cos that’s the usual rule of thumb)

No beans for me

Or Hatter’s tea

(Or Granny, dressed as a fairy)

rainbow with couple

Wildlife or elves?!

Housework myself

(Work like Cinders, for no wealth)

My ‘chosen’ child

Ain’t meek, or mild.

(No prophesy for us got filed)

My special quests?

To get her dressed.

(In healthy food, keep her impressed…)

At rainbow end

I’d like a friend:

Someone on which I could depend.

I wonder what

Is in that pot

(Some leftovers?  Encrusted grot?)

To me pure gold

Is rather cold

For some adventurer so bold…

I am not sure the last three verses are in the correct order, but I ran out of time.  The rhymes were eluding me a bit 😉 hopefully you get what points etc I was going for, anyway?

Ok, I’d better hop off and get back to bed.  My joints are hurting and I am not sitting in Eldest’s padded swivel chair over my laptop (cos it’s after 2.30am) but hunched in Hubby’s wooden one at the PC.

I’m restless, but definitely NOT comfy, hahahahaha!

I will try and whip up at least one more creative offering before the day’s over.  Sorry again for seeming to disappear before – I’m still alive and I love you all really!!

Tomorrow

Facebook Collaborations, Mental Health, Random poetry 3 Comments »

Hello 🙂

Katie was in control again today (I love that I have repeat contributors!  Do feel free to jump in if you’re new to giving me material, however.  Then become one of my regulars…)

I was to have a title of Tomorrow, my character was to be “a sailor (male) with a broken boat” and he was to appear in a poem.

I wrote while our boys were at their educational establishment(s):

Tomorrow

It’s a slow seep

Around my feet

A listing barely felt;

In open sea

Just life, and me:

Resolve begins to melt.

picture of beaten up boat

The dip of oars

The pelt that pours

A rhythm set off kilter;

A madd’ning wait:

The lap of fate

My universe’s filter.

To row for shore,

Or bail once more

Is all the choice I have;

Upend this boat

And pray I’ll float –

Through oceans carve a path?

My pretty wife!

Long fought-for life!

In thoughts, while fins skirt ‘round;

Strong, steady hands

This catch will land –

Lay, choking, on dry ground…

Not often that I do a rhyming one these days, thanks for the ideas Katie!!

I urgently need some more suggestions on this Facebook post, please!  Gotta keep my random wheels nicely oiled…

See you tomorrow 🙂

Spritely Hickory

Mental Health, Random poetry No Comments »

Hello!

I have gone back to my old format just for one day, in order to give you all some time to read my new sticky post and get involved (see below).

C’mon, you know you want to…!  I have comments already, so join the queue…Hubby informs me that Sandra has provided me with tomorrow’s prompts, and Katie for Wednesday’s! Yaaay!

I plumped for Textfixer to get my nine words, just because I am a coward and didn’t want to brave Jimpix on a Monday 😉

Blinding  Curve  Light  Germ  Aerobatic  Sprite  Hickory  Bounce  Sponge

Bullies blinding me

To the upward curve of your mouth,

I walk outwith your favourable light;

Each creative germ squashed

By their aerobatic words.

depressed girl

Some invisible sprite

Holds the hickory to my legs;

I fail to bounce out of range –

Ever the sponge

For their negativity.

The Agreement

Facebook Collaborations, Health, Random Short Stories 2 Comments »

Hi 🙂

Today I changed the rules, and reworked my ‘sticky post’ on my Facebook page so my lovely followers could suggest a sentence to use in a very short story (that I had to construct in 20 mins); and also tell me whether the sentence should be:

  1. The opening phrase
  2. The closing line

Or

  1. If I could use it anywhere in the story

Sandy stepped up first, and gave me this line to use: “unless by prior agreement”.  She left it to me to decide where I inserted it into my story, so I set 20 mins on the timer and got to work…

I hadn’t taken anyone with me.  That was my first mistake.  There would be many others, but…yeah.  No one to hold my hand, ask the right questions – remind me that everything would look better on the other side.

I’m not sure what was said afterwards.  I remember that the floor felt better than the chair.  Sturdier, stronger, less likely to shift beneath me.  It was reassuring to know it was still there.

I remember that the nurses all had perfume that competed, and made me feel a bit like I was on a sedate hen night.  They all talked at once, as I floated into bed.Pixabay nurse

It was morning. I was dazzled by the sunshine slanting through the blind.

My husband got a free parking pass; unheard of “unless by prior agreement”.  A nurse joked about my VIP status.  I wondered who to complain to – whether this situation meant I had to be ‘graceful’ for the rest of my days.

Strangely, I didn’t think of Jamie until the lunch trays arrived.  How jealous he’d be that I got to eat strawberry jelly on a Wednesday!

I couldn’t decide what exactly the backstory for this piece should be.  I was going to write ‘midwives’ at first, but I thought ‘nurses’ gave more scope for the reader’s imagination?

My red spidery scrawl is littered with lines through words, but I feel I am using the word ‘that’ a lot this week.  It’s bugging me.

I can’t get away from my old pal alliteration, either.  Subconsciously scribbled sentences, saturated senseless with whispered words sporting similar sounds! Torture…

Thanks to Sandy for the inspiration!! Hope you like what I came up with 😉

Tomorrow it is Sheelagh’s turn.  I have not looked at her comment on the ‘sticky post’ further than where she indicates it is an opening line she has for me.  Don’t want to spoil my surprise before my writing session tomorrow…

Hop over to my page and add yourself to the little queue of brain sparks that is building in the sticky post!  I look forward to using your contribution in a future post…I’m stupidly excited about the whole challenge, truth be told. I will get a notification that you’ve posted a comment, but won’t look at it until your turn in the queue, so I can’t write stuff in my head from your phrase, days in advance and kinda cheat.  Cos where’s the nervous fun in that?!

What better motivator than someone depositing a completely random gift in my creative lap, and me having to make it fly in a crazily short space of time?! 😛  🙂

My First Facebook Collaboration!!

Facebook Collaborations, Mental Health, Random poetry No Comments »

Hello out there!

I was thinking about all the wonderful peeps who support my ramblings here. Most of them hang out on Facebook of an evening (around kid and dinner stuff, etc).  I usually use my Facebook page solely to post new content, but that kinda gets stale on your timeline after a while, doesn’t it?!

So I asked for one word to be commented from each of my Facebook readers, with the promise that I would construct a poem from the first nine.  I am happy to say I reached my quota pretty quickly, and the results are below 🙂 (nervous drumroll…)

Disassociate  Empathy  Magical  Charlatan  Reflective  Anomaly  Happy  Rainclouds  Error

I never quite disassociate myself

From that scared little girl

With blonde hair and glasses,

Not receiving empathy

For the wounds she couldn’t describe.

Partly stood in magical worlds

Where she was omnipotent;

It was hard to face a reality

Where her benevolent acts were shunned.

pixabay cartton girl with glasses

As she learned, the teenage her

Grew a charlatan shell

Only gaining soulfood

In a deep reflective trance.

A walking anomaly,

She felt distanced from happy

So embraced the rainclouds

And wrote of their flight.

And that was not an error;

She did it well, and now

Has taught herself to fly.

I think our bonding,

Through life gifted outside of our self,

Has served us very well.

Big hugs to: (in order of appearance) Sandy, Katie, Amanda, Donna, Emma, Jenny, Hannah, Stephanie and Michelle 😉 Great words…I only had seconds left to circle them at the end of my 15 mins!!

Hope you all approve of the outcome…!

A Bathful Of Rubies

Mental Health, Random poetry 2 Comments »

Hello!

Today’s is a familiar tale of a tortured soul, and her subsequent demise. Cue violin music, moody lighting, long dark hair, Emo clothing…

Standing  Wash  Increase  Stick  Oatmeal  Disappear  Fairies  Clip  Bath

I’m standing alone,

Wash the tears from my face

Increase of anxieties

Stick bad thoughts in place.

Your face over oatmeal

Makes hope disappear,

Away with the fairies?

You clip my wings here.

A bath fills with rubies:

A bottle of pills

A knife flashes silver

And my heart is stilled.

I was throwing out vocals for hubby’s songwriting yesterday, as he had asked me to, for part of his birthday present (inexpensive experience gift, and all that).  It was so much fun!! There was no set tune for either song, so I made it up as I went along.  He has about two years’ record of collaboration on the Kompoz site, so there has been a warm reception to our session, which is very flattering!!

We used a cheap mic from Amazon, with half the echo on, and made the MP3s through Audacity

Rust Belts is my attempt at soul, Isabella Belladonna is a more a nod to Leonard Cohen (if you click the links, you can access the songs through the thumbnail pic on the top left of the screen you get to).

I just sang hubby’s lyrics the way I heard them in my head, and you’ll know (if you are a regular reader) that is a rather random place to spring from… 😉

Hope you enjoy Hubby’s hard work!!
