Rebellion (#NaPoWriMo Day 20)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hello!

Today’s prompt was to write about rebellion in some way.

I have just finished listening to The Self Care Project by Jayne Hardy (the founder of The Blurt Foundation) on Audible.  The below seemed appropriate:

woman showing her muscles

Right on cue

Edging into focus, the

Bad thought brigade:

Exit of light!

Lampooned vigour!

Lost motivation!!

I didn’t let them in

Oh no,

Not on my watch…!

Erasure (#NaPoWriMo Day 19)

Hey 🙂

The optional prompt saw me write a paragraph and then create a poem from it by missing out some of the words…

Inside those gates, there was a lot of joy.  Even now I can see the old bricks that led up to the roof of the school building and remember the smell of the music room.  The corridor had two steps up, on the right, and then it was our classroom.  I can’t remember what year that was, but I loved helping to paint the giant tree that pointed the way from the wall.  I’d dipped a little sponge in green paint and watched the textured marks appear with great delight; balancing on the top step to reach higher than my friend.  The rest of the corridor was a dusky kind of blue, like a lazy Spring sky.  It always made me feel happy.drawn picture of a school

Remember the smell of the music room.

A little sponge,

Great delight;

Higher than my friend.

It made me feel happy.

Responsive (#NaPoWriMo Day 18)

Hello 🙂

The prompt for today asked me to read someone else’s poem from end to beginning, responding to each line as I went.  It suggested that it should be a poem I didn’t know.  I thumbed through my copy of Modern Scottish Women Poets and chose a two-verser by Elise McKay entitled “No Answer” that I hadn’t read before:

Here is my poem:

A life emblazoned on a screen –

Rainbows –

It spoke of things I didn’t want to see again:

Ingratitude, incongruence.

I bought myself some roses,

Became blurred around the edges.

I tiptoed into the shadows.

Sometimes I refuse to write:

An empty vessel, screaming.

I’ll always give into the impulse eventually…

This pleasing mentality can blind me.

Sometimes a phrase can sit awkwardly on a page;

Words are only fleeting,

I’m only human.

Sometimes memory is better left unetched.

This was a surprisingly fun exercise!

Anecdotal (#NaPoWriMo Day 17)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hi!

Today’s poem is baggily based on a legendary driving ‘lesson’ my Grandmother had, as per the prompt.

A day of ‘shine –

The air sublime –

I took a ride out with him;

My checkered dress

All neatly pressed,

New hat with pretty pink trim.

car

“It isn’t far,

You drive the car”

He said: a smile, a titter.

I took the bait

And sealed my fate

(I’m an impulsive critter)

I paid the toll:

I lost control!

Wheels that embarkment breached…

Him: [unimpressed]

“Was that your best?!”

Me: “What?! We ‘hit the beach’…!”

Too Much (#NaPoWriMo Day 16)

#NaPoWriMo, Childhood, Other Poetry, Parenting No Comments »

Hiya 🙂

Prompt: a poem that prominently features the idea of play.

TOO MUCH

A little freedom is a dangerous thing.

As sweet faces are kissed

And waved into rooms

Full of toys,

A hunger grows in me

For the dizzying array of opportunities

Crowding ‘round the gate.

There are buses into town!

(I could leave my phone on one, then

Take out all my money

And hop the next train (and the next) )

Or set up a life

As someone else,

Not far from here.

Deny I was me

If anyone asked.

My hair might look good green.

(Can one get a tattoo

At short notice…?)

“Nope, definitely not her…”

Joining a gym might be nice.

Or getting my ears pierced again…

I hear volunteers are wanted

For that shelter down the road.

Or should I just order a hot-tub

To arrive tomorrow?

The sun’s meant to shine…

Luckily: the kids are soon collected.

Folly averted – for another day.

The Childcatcher’s Hat (#NaPoWriMo Day 15)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hello!

The prompt was to write about a villain facing a tough situation that reveals they are human; while still being evil.

A gust of wind

Took the favourite hat

O’er the lollipop stand.

Aghast, he grabbed

But seized only air

(His skills seemed to forsake him)

The hat had been

A much prized thing

A reward at one hundred.

The Bomburst favour

Had put a spring in his step

And a much crueller swish in his cane.

It seemed to wave as it flew

Far too eager

To let him stand bereft.

Diving Into Dreams (#NaPoWriMo Day 14)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry 4 Comments »

Hey 🙂

Today’s prompt was to pretend I was writing parts of an imaginary dream dictionary, for one or more of this list:

Teacup, Hammer, Seagull, Ballet Slipper, Shark, Wobbly Table, Dentist and Rowboat

I, of course, included them all 😉

My poem reads more like me explaining my dreams to someone else, however.  Well, it’s always an optional prompt…

DIVING INTO DREAMS

A teacup shatters:

Social connections lost

My communication

And sympathy skills

Are alien to me.

(Better than a lack of cake:

A forced diet

Or a bout of hard times

In my future)

A hammer chases

Screeching seagulls,

While I twirl in ballet slippers

Out-dancing a shark…

This one’s easy.

That shark has no real teeth

(see?)

It’s a small problem I am bigging up

Because I want to avoid it.

This is my flight reflex

(Am I not dancing Swan Lake?)

The hammer and seagulls

Were probably real:

The cacophony of good weather

And sleeping in.

rowing boat

Across a wobbly table,

A dentist smiles

Speaking of her childhood

Where she borrowed the family rowboat

And escaped for a bit.

I experience wobbly tables

Wherever I go.

I like to think they are a reminder

That nothing said

Has a stable platform…

We are always biased in thought.

I have no fear of dentists,

I think I have just been reading

Too much children’s fiction

Where the parents have good jobs…?

I always like the feeling of freedom:

That idea I could roam

Unhindered,

Return to days I never had

Of sailing out of sight.

I watched this TED talk by Isaac Lidsky this week, and my ‘wobbly table’ idea really gets the nod there!  What a remarkable man.

Ostrich (#NaPoWriMo Day 13)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hello!

Thirteen days!

The prompt was for me to take a well-known phrase and tweak it to give me something new to write about.

Have you noticed that there are a few sayings around eggs?!

ostrich silhouette

The Ostrich Of Doom takes no prisoners:

Stealth ovum stashed

In delicate places;

Leaving dust flurries

Wherever she goes.

Have Been Haibunned (#NaPoWriMo Day 12)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hey 🙂

Today I was supposed to write a Haibun that ‘takes in the natural landscape of the place you live’.  I’m not sure I fulfilled that, but I did find this PDF about the Haibun form; and then go on to attempt a poem that talks loosely about what my kids got up to outside my house after dinner 😉

“Catch me! Chase me! C’mon stupid, go faster!”

“I’m not stupid!  The wind is blowing me backwards!  That leaf almost got in my eye…!”

The endless keeping up that little legs have to do.  Even on scooters in the street, big brother’s taunt is always just out of reach.

The air “smells of eggs” (from the waste treatment plant down the road).  Youngest wondered what kind of tree liked eating waste…

some boys on their scooters

‘Stupidity’ masks

Fearless lunges we should cheer;

Conformity sucks.

Just around the corner is an expanse of trees, a place Eldest got fascinated with a few summers ago.  But he has become resigned to the fact Youngest would protest if asked to go.

The infinity symbols they trace on the tarmac with their wheels seem to hypnotise them.  Their cheeks flush with momentum as the wind picks up again.

Wending towards rest

A father sees his children

Lost in home pursuits.

Future For… (#NaPoWriMo Day 11)

#NaPoWriMo, Other Poetry No Comments »

Hello!

The optional prompt for today was to write about what my future provides.  I set the first part of this poem in the ‘now’ and the second part as a projection into my future.

(See how many thought leader references you can spot…)

I

I am watching ‘motivational videos’

From a puffy eye

At a small hour

Pillow-propped;

My t-shirt stained

With yesterday’s cake.

My ‘journal’ is closed on the bed

Business PDFs poking

From the confines;

Other people’s lifework

Resounding from the page.

phone with motivational message

I have ‘performance prompts’ aplenty –

(Part of me is eager to start,

But the scared portion

Is exercising her lungs)

Life coaches live in my screen.

I know them all

By name and voice.

If I count backwards from 5

The world will be laid

At my well-heeled feet.

My Small Stuff sweat

Runs in rivulets of ‘shoulds’

But never smells like must.

II

I’ve written them down!

They glow!  Bright beacons through the mist…

Stones with aspirational words on them

I know my way.

Each habit’s worn so that I now see.

I live to serve:

My grateful audience and I

Conversing socially.

I learned the hacks.

My physiology

Will outperform my peers’.

I calmly meditate upon

The lessons,

And listen with both ears.

In melting down the anger and the fear,

I merge with universal truth; get clear.

We all know clarity’s the holy grail

So how, now, could this plan possibly fail…?

Bullet journal uplifting phrase
